Understanding the importance of Home-School Communication

Home-school communicationAs a parent of an ADHD child, many of you may already know how crucial strategic home-school communication can be in order to foster your child's well-being. Some of you, however, might be on the fence with how much - if at all - you want to share with the school.

Communication with your child's school about their ADHD diagnosis can be a complicated decision, and it's a personal one for sure. With that said, there are several reasons why we believe establishing home-school communication can be beneficial:

...it can help keep both parents and teachers informed about progress and performance (academically and behaviourally) so everybody's supports and efforts are mutually aligned

...it can help both parents and teachers share their unique knowledge and experience - on a broader scale and with respect to the specific child - so both can be more responsive to the child's individual needs

...it ensures parents better understand the school curriculum, expectations being placed on their child, support being offered, and what their child is experiencing in their day-to-day while at school

...it ensures teachers better understand your child's home life, their specific strengths and areas of growth, and your own hopes and expectations for your child

...it shows your child that the important adults in their lives are working together to encourage and support them, making them more likely to achieve and have more positive attitudes about school

...and much more
