ADHD and Sugar: Does Sugar make hyperactivity worse?

sugar and ADHDThe idea that sugar can make ADHD symptoms worse is prevalent, but how true is it? Right now, it seems like the majority of the research out there has not supported this theory. Yes, you can find a study here and there about a connection between a high sugar diet and hyperactivity. But, most of the medical industry maintains that there isn't a clear link between the two.

Of interest, some studies have suggested that the perception that sugar increases hyperactivity might influence reported symptoms by parents. For example, in the article Busting the Sugar-Hyperactivity Myth, one study showed "parents who believe a child's behavior is affected by sugar are more likely to perceive their children as hyperactive when they've been led to believe the child has just had a sugary drink."

Interesting stuff!

Either way, if you think your child's diet may be making their symptoms worse, consult with their doctor. Particularly before making any big dietary changes!
