Myths about ADHD: "You just need to try harder"

"You just need to try harder": This can be a damaging phrase for an ADHD child or adult. It can imply that we're lazy - and for many, the opposite is more often than not the case. We're often working harder than everybody else on the inside! With ADHD the intentions are often there, but the follow through is what we struggle with. This isn't because we aren't trying hard- it really is a brain difference!

If "trying harder" or "focusing more" were that easy, don't you think we would be doing it already?

According to those calendars full of random holidays, today is a day called "work harder" day. Seeing this reminded us how important it is to stop and think before offering advice. We need to empower and encourage our loved ones - not reduce their issues to laziness or work ethic.

So, if someone in your life has ADHD, give them the benefit of the doubt. Assume they really are trying, and encourage them instead to try something different.

We need to focus on generating new and creative strategies to get around our challenges. We need to figure out what works for us and our brains - not how to power through and "work harder."

So, let's change the message moving forward: We don't need to try harder. We need to try something new. This can be a key to moving forward!
